Creation of Presentation

 

This is a screenshot of my laptop desktop a I worked on the Presentation powerpoint for my graded Unit.

I normally have a blank desktop but I feel this shows the effort that was involved in creating the presentation. I drew on all the resources I had created myself, such as pro tools sessions and photo files. I had folders full of screen shots and soundfiles and weblinks. I would have to open existing protools, and reason sessions to bounce and edit media for my presentation and also grab screen shots to visually enhance my presentation. I also took screenshots of web pages I had researched to back up my presentation.
The experience of creating a powerpoint was new to me but I feel I have risen and adapted to the chalenge at hand.

Pro Tools

During the Creation of my media I have used Pro Tools extensively, being able to use it fast and efficiently was vital. I researched many sources to learn skills needed to achive a task and to solve problems if they occured

Obtaining knowledge from sources such as You Tube and magazines dedicated to Pro Tools helped me greatly. Being able to learn vital workflow tips such as Zoom presets and Memory locations helped me greatly in the creation of media for my presentation.

Sound Design Using reason

 As a sound designer it is vital to know how to create all kinds of sounds using modern software. In this video the producer Lucky Date gives a tutorial of how to create the powerfull bass synth used by the band Justice using a Reason Combinator

In my presentation, I will talk about how I enjoy creating my own combinators to use in projects. This tutorial was vital in the creation of a combinator I will demonstrate during my presentation.

Look and Design of Presentation

Along with the audio aspect of the presentation a visual style is essential to create an impression :

I have always admired "thedesignersrepublic" for thier use of crisp clean logos that are very distincive and stand out. They have designed many album covers for bands such as Pop Will Eat Itself and also have been involved with video game design. I was influenced by thier simple but striking ideas to design a logo to use on my cd covers and other materials I will distribute in my presentation.

To make my slide show different and stand out I used a photo of a work by the artist Banksy as the backdrop, its simple and effective but does not distract from the subject of the presentation slides.

Studio Booking

When working in the creative industries it is essential to be able to manage time and personell. Studio time and manpower can be highly expensive. During the creation of my graded unit I had to Book studio time, engineers and musicians during a very busy time of studio usage. For some projects only a particular studio could be used. The following are the sessions I booked and organised :

At one point during the creation of my 5:1 sound effects a Soundfield Microphone became available for a short period of time. I took the opportunity to record 5:1 effects at short notice.

All of these sessions were vital in the creation of the media I will showcase in my presentation without the ablilty to organise these I would have nothing to show.

Photos from Various Projects

During the making of the media for my presentation I documented various processes with photographs

I took these pictures over the course of the preperation time as the graded unit will be a presentation. These can be a strong visual aid to my presentation and will help explain what I wil be discussing. I also feel it shows I was working with the presentation in  mind by documenting my activities
I will edit these and use them in my slides accordingly.

Combinators

As my presentation is on the subject of Sound Design I decided to show that it is a subject that I am interested not only professionaly but personally too. I took screen shots of various combinators that I had created on my own projects  and pasted them to a slide in my presentation.
I feel this will show my knowledege and skills in my chosen subject. After displaying the slide I can present an audio demonstation of some of these.

To understand the factors involved in working as a sound designer and how one develops thier career its essential to research Designers currently working within the industry.

This link to the BBc website gave me information on how to break into the industry, possible career paths and understanding the craft.

By showing that I have a solid Understanding of the role of a Sound Designer when I am discussing my motivations during the presentation I will be able to show that it is a career I have researched and want to pursue.

Sound Design Using Reason

This is an article I read on Sound on sounds website that showed me innovitive ways of routing Reason through compressers and using the spider audio merger/splitter and the spider cv merger/spilitter to trigger creative production effects to selected instruments in a rack.

Sound on Sound Reason Tech

Keeping up do date with how new techniqes are employed in creating music is vital. Reserching how to make these processes are undertaken and trying the yourself breaks down the method and enbles you to use them creatively.
In my presentation I have a audio file of one of my tracks that uses a variation of this setup.

Power Point

To display my presentation I will be using Microsoft powerpoint,  I researched videos on You tube to help me with this:

By researching various videos relating to powerpoint I was able to learn how to create my own backgrounds for my presentation slides to make it distinctive and origional. I was also able to learn how to manage and work with photo's to create displays and overlaps on various slides in my presentation.

Knowing the copyright law is essential in order to protect your own and not infringe anothers. The website of the intelectual property office is an essential resource:

Contracts Commonly Used in the Creative Indusries

When working in the creative industries it is vital to understand the legal issues relating to ownership of any created media. I read an article in Future Music called "How To Make A Contract"

This provided me with valuable information on binding contracts, royaly issues and also a link to download sample contracts that could be edited :

I downloaded these contracts and tailored them to my specifications. I will hand out a printed version during my presentation.

Sound Design Research

During the process of creating my profile I researched many websites relating to sound design, this is a link to Film sound.org looking at sound design by Ben Burtt for Star Wars :

I looked at this in order to understand how a highly experienced Sound Designer approaches and creates original effects. He combines a mixture of electronic and organic sounds to create sounds that have no basis in reality.

I used this information to inform my approach to creating sound effects in the Splinter Cell trailer used in my presentation.

There are several reasons why I have posted this in my logbook. Firstly, it shows I have knowledge of internet resources to publicise your work and get recognition and also constuctive feedback. I will show links and screenshots in presentation of the sites where my work can be found.
Another reason is that I rejected this music to use in  my presentation trailer as I used a sample from a Jesus and Mary Chain track. I do not have the permission to use the sample and unlike a sample cd (when the seal is broken you automatically own the rights) I would be unable to use it publicly as it would infringe copyright.

Welcome to my blog !

I,ve set up this blog to run in conjunction to my Graded Unit project for my second year of my HND in Sound Production. The aim of the graded unit is to prepare a presentation for an interview relation to the post of a Sound Designer for Big Fish Audio.
In this blog I will include progress reports of the work I,m carrying out for the media to be included in the presentation, links to relevent websites, videos and literature I,ve researched to compile my media and on overview of how I plan to use my findings within my presentation.
I hope to blog as often as I can about the processes I have undertaken to give a full picture of the work undertaken during the creation of my presentation.
